FAQ

STUDIO ETIQUETTE

  • Before your first class, please arrive at the studio 10 minutes early.
  • For all classes, plan to arrive 5 minutes early and stay until the end of class.
  • Please be on time. We understand that every once in a while life gets messy and it is difficult to arrive on time, or you may need to step out 5 minutes early. For safety reasons, it is our policy not to let anyone into class more than 10 minutes late, and we will ask you not to attend if you come late or leave early on a regular basis.
  • Please be respectful of others by tidying up your practice area after class and returning all borrowed props.
  • Men, we can serve you better with your shirts on. This allows us to assist you in your postures.
  • Before class begins, the studios are reserved as a calm space for those who would like to meditate or sit quietly before practice. However, we would be thrilled if you wanted to socialize in the great hall or the tea lounge. In fact, we encourage you to introduce yourself to a stranger.
  • WHAT IS YOGA?

Yoga is an ancient tradition from India that includes a range of practices to help you live a healthy, vibrant life. In the west, yoga is often known as a series of postures, or asanas. The physical asanas of yoga have been documented to provide significant health benefits, but doing yoga is different than going to the gym because it also integrates a way of paying attention to your body and movement. This is why yoga is a powerful tool for decreasing stress while allowing practitioners to stay fit and healthy.

If you would like to learn more about yoga and its lineage beyond the adaptation of yoga postures within a studio environment, read this informational article.

I’M NOT FLEXIBLE. CAN I DO THIS?

Yes! Anyone can do yoga. Come with an open mind, and be willing to explore. You will be amazed at how fast your body begins to lengthen, stretch, and gain a new range of motion.

WHAT AMENITIES DOES THE STUDIO PROVIDE?

Be Luminous Yoga provides an urban oasis where you not only have opportunities to practice yoga and meditation, but you also have access to coaching services. We offer full locker rooms with showers, as well as free 2.5 hour validated parking (in the garage located off of 9th Avenue). Feel free to sip tea in our lounge while enjoying a good conversation or book, or shop for gifts and accessories in our boutique. We also provide filtered water for guests to refill your water bottles, as well as towel rentals.

WHAT DO I NEED TO WEAR AND BRING?

Wear comfortable clothes that won’t fall up over your head. Be sure to bring a water bottle and towel to all vinyasa classes. Note that sweatpants may be uncomfortable if you are taking a heated class. Women, you may want to wear a tight-fitting top that won’t move out of place.

WHAT DO I DO THE FIRST TIME I VISIT THE STUDIO?

If you are new to the studio, you will need to fill out a waiver when you first come in. Please check in at the front desk and we will help be glad to give you a tour. For new students, we recommend the Introductory Series or a gentle yoga class. We also offer a 10-days for $20 Local’s Special. Our Front Desk Associates will be happy to help you find the right class and program for you.

    HOW DO I PAY?

You can pay in person when you arrive or check-in online for any class or workshop. We accept cash, checks and credit cards.

WHY IS THE ROOM HEATED AND HOW HOT IS IT?

When your muscles are warm, you can stretch safely and you cleanse the body of toxins. We use both internal heat (your own movement and breath) and external heat (the heat in the room) to help you cleanse and lengthen.

The Introductory Series classes are heated to 83 degrees, and all other vinyasa classes are heated to 90 degrees. Other classes range between 75 and 85 degrees depending on the class and its purpose.

HOW MANY CALORIES DO YOU BURN IN YOGA PRACTICE?

Depending on your body and the length of class, you will burn anywhere from 400 to 600 calories in a class.
