Mindfulness Meditation is the art and science of paying attention, of listening to our hearts and minds and the world around us, of learning to be "intimate with all things."

Mindfulness mediation is quickly gaining popularity in psychology and is increasingly seen as an alternative to meditation in treating matters of the heart and mind. It is the most scientifically researched form of meditation, with researchers publishing 600 papers on its benefits last year alone, which includes everything from increased immune response to heightened empathy to reduced emotional reactivity.

Many of us acknowledge that meditation would be a beneficial, and perhaps necessary, addition to our daily regimen, but starting and keeping up a meditation practice can be very difficult. That's where this 6-week course comes in.

In this course you will learn the techniques to develop a relationship with yourself and others based on kindness and acceptance, rather than judgement. Take the time to learn beneficial skills that will last a lifetime.

Program Logistics:

Thursday evenings: 03/13, 03/20, 03/27, 04/10, 04/17, 04/24, 6pm to 8pm

Day Long Immersion: Saturday 03/29, 9:00AM-4:00PM

About Brent:
Brent Morton has been passionately practicing meditation for almost 10 years, and teaching yoga and meditation for 6. He has spent over a year in silent meditation retreats in monasteries and retreat centers all over North America, Thailand, Burma, and India. He is currently in a 4 year invite-only meditation teacher training with Buddhist Meditation pioneers Jack Kornfield, Joseph Goldstein, Philip Moffitt, Tara Brach, and others through Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Marin County, CA and Insight Meditation Society in Barre, MA. He enjoys teaching meditation in a very pragmatic as well as heartfelt way.

Take Our Intro to Yoga Series

This eight class series provides you with the tools you need to be safe and have fun in your yoga practice. We break down the sequence and philosophy step-by-step so that you not only understand the basics of yoga, but you also understand the reasoning for the practice and how to modify it for your body. It is a powerful mind and body workout. This class is taught in a heated room or 85 degrees. Check our dates, but classes generally start on the first Monday of each month. Classes are held Monday and Wednesday nights 7:15pm-8:45pm (90 minutes).

Take Our Intro to Yoga Series

This seven class series provides you with the tools you need to be safe and have fun in your yoga practice. We break down the sequence and philosophy step-by-step so that you not only understand the basics of yoga, but you also understand the reasoning for the practice and how to modify it for your body. It is a powerful mind and body workout. This class is taught in a heated room or 85 degrees. Check our dates, but classes generally start on the first Monday of each month. Take Our Intro to Yoga Series

This eight class series provides you with the tools you need to be safe and have fun in your yoga practice. We break down the sequence and philosophy step-by-step so that you not only understand the basics of yoga, but you also understand the reasoning for the practice and how to modify it for your body. It is a powerful mind and body workout. This class is taught in a heated room or 85 degrees. Check our dates, but classes generally start on the first Monday of each month. Classes are held Monday and Wednesday nights 7:15pm-8:45pm (90 minutes).

What Is Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction? An Interview with Sherry Williams

This fall, starting Thursday, September 11th, Sherry Williams will be offering an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction class at BLY. Here she answers a few questions about the series:

What is Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction?

As the Center for Mindfulness so eloquently explains, “Mindfulness is a way of learning to relate directly to whatever is happening in your life, a way of taking charge of your life, a way of doing something for yourself that no one else can do for you – consciously and systematically working with your own stress, pain, illness, and the challenges and demands of everyday life. In contrast, you’ve probably encountered moments of 'mindlessness' – a loss of awareness resulting in forgetfulness, separation from self, and a sense of living mechanically. Restoring within yourself a balanced sense of health and well being requires increased awareness of all aspects of self, including body and mind, heart and soul. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is intended to ignite this inner capacity and infuse your life with awareness.”

Where did it come from/how was it developed?

The Stress Reduction Program, founded by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, has been featured in the Bill Moyers’ PBS documentary Healing and The Mind; on NBC Dateline; on ABC’s Chronicle; and in various national print media. It is the subject of Jon Kabat-Zinn’s best selling book, Full Catastrophe Living and Saki Santorelli’s book, Heal Thy Self. Since its inception, more than 20,000 people have completed the traditional eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program at UMass, and learned how to use their innate resources and abilities to respond more effectively to stress, pain, and illness. The central focus of the Clinic is intensive training in mindfulness meditation and its integration into the challenges/adventures of everyday life.

Who can benefit from MBSR?

MBSR has benefited people reporting a variety of conditions and concerns, ranging from general interest in prevention and wellness to stress-related or other medical issues. It is not offered as an alternative to traditional medical and psychological treatments, but as a complement to those approaches.

How is it different from coming to a regular yoga or meditation class?

This is a two hour long class each week for a total of sixteen hours, plus a one day retreat on Saturday, October 18th. There is time to build community within the class, to have the opportunity to better know yourself and others in ways that may not be available in a standard yoga or meditation class.

What will the class include?

It will include guided instruction in mindfulness meditation practices, gentle yoga, discussion regarding the interplay of mind and body in relation to stress, how stress reduction skills can be applied to your daily life, mindful communication and group dialogue, and home practice assignments.

Participation requires a brief telephone conversation with me prior to September 11th, a copy of Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn (available at BLY), and open-hearted commitment to the classes, retreat, and homework assignments.

Is the class open to beginners?

Absolutely! Beginners (and all levels) are welcome!

About Carley & Nicole:

An adventurer by nature, Carley thrives in the outdoors. From surfing to rock climbing to skiing and hiking, her feet are happiest in motion except when they land her solidly on her mat. As a full time yoga instructor for the past 5 years, Carley offers classes in yoga studios, corporate offices, and clinical settings. She believes yoga is accessible to everyone and guides her students to listen to the deeper more subtle cues of their bodies to overcome whatever curve balls life may have thrown them. She adds laughter, compassion, strength, and skillful physical adjustments to her classes in the hope to inspire individuals to reach their greatest potential both on andoff the mat.

A former journalist, Nicole was first drawn to heat, the powerful flow and the hands-on assists she discovered in power vinyasa classes as a bridge from her intense workdays into presence and peace. She came out of every practice calmer and more joyful. Become an assistant at Be Luminous Yoga;
Advance your teaching skills, ability to read students' needs, and hands-on assisting.

The Assisting & Teaching Development Program is an intensive 8-week program that will empower you with tools and coaching to become a powerful teaching assistant and/or teacher.

The program is designed for those interested in assisting or teaching, as well as new teachers who desire the confidence and experience to provide powerful hands-on assisting and lead a class that makes a difference.

You will have opportunities to assist and to practice teaching. Teachers, you will receive feedback on all elements of your teaching, from assisting, to how to deepen your teaching of physical asana and layering in spirituality and empowerment.

This program is a requirement for new teachers to join the substitute teacher list at Be Luminous Yoga.

It is the most scientifically researched form of meditation, with researchers publishing 600 papers on its benefits last year alone, which includes everything from increased immune response to heightened empathy to reduced emotional reactivity.

Many of us acknowledge that meditation would be a beneficial and perhaps, necessary addition to our daily regimen, but starting and keeping up a meditation practice can be very difficult. That's where this 6-week course comes in.

In this course you will learn the techniques to develop a relationship with yourself and others based on kindness and acceptance, rather than judgement. Take the time to learn beneficial skills that will last a lifetime.

Program Logistics:

Tuesday evenings: 10/28, 11/04, 11/11, 11/18, 11/25, 12/2, 6pm to 8pm
Day long immersion: Saturday 11/15 9am-4pm.

About Brent:
Brent Morton has been passionately practicing meditation for almost 10 years, and teaching yoga and meditation for 6. He has spent over a year in silent meditation retreats in monasteries and retreat centers all over North America, Thailand, Burma, and India. He is currently in a 4 year invite-only meditation teacher training with Buddhist Meditation pioneers Jack Kornfield, Joseph Goldstein, Philip Moffitt, Tara Brach, and others through Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Marin County, CA and Insight Meditation Society in Barre, MA. He enjoys teaching meditation in a very pragmatic as well as heartfelt way.
